On November 16, 1902, soccer enthusiasts met late in the soccer season at Christian Brothers College to permanently organize the St. Louis Association Football League. The competition replaced the prior soccer league in hopes of cutting back on rowdy play and spreading the better players among the teams rather than being concentrated on one or two. Four teams, C.B.C., Diels, Kern's and Sportsmans, began the season two weeks later with two games played every Sunday at the C.B.C. campus and Sportsman's Park. The season came down to the last Sunday gameday on March 29 with two clubs tied at 12 points and two tied at 11. But, with Sportsmans beating Diels 1-0 and a draw between C.B.C. and Kern's left the league with a three-way tie at the top of the table. C.B.C., Kern's and Sportsmans had 13 points with Diels in fourth with 11.
